HLTAID009 Short 1 day

Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

The course covers:

  • Respond to an emergency situation.
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures.
  • Communicate details of the incident.
  • Review the incident.

 

During the course you will cover the following topicsand will be trained on how to  complete a range of First Aid tasks including:

  • managing, in line with ARC guidelines and using an appropriate manikin, the unconscious, breathing casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise
  • managing, in line with ARC guidelines and using an appropriate manikin, the unconscious, non-breathing casualty
  • responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
  • managing casualties, with the following:
    • anaphylaxis
    • asthma
    • CPR techniques on adults, children and infants
    • incident reporting
    • how to properly assess an emergency situation
    • DRSABCD
    • using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • first aid procedures for bleeding, burns and fractures
    • managing medical conditions such as epilepsy and asthma
    • managing medical emergencies such as snake/spider bites, poisons and choking
    • infection control procedures
    • managing exposure to extreme temperatures
    • administering  first aid for eye & soft tissue injuries
    • assessing and moving sick & injured
    • legal responsibilities of a first aider
    • basic anatomy
    • managing shock
  • using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
  • conveying incident details to emergency services or advising casualty on any required post incident action
  • providing an accurate verbal and written report of the incident
  • reviewing the incident.

Course outcomes

When you have successfully completed the assessment tasks for the unit HLTAID011 Provide First Aid   you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

Duration & frequency

Face-to-face classroom training using Moodle as a learning resource and to complete knowledge questions followed by practical demonstration/observation. The course is conducted over two days with assessment taking place on the afternoon of day one and day two.  There is pre-course reading and activity that must be completed before coming to the course that will take approximately four (4) hours to complete.
